Apple Keyboard Woes
Currently I’m waiting for a 16MB download to finish which could dramatically alter the course of this post.
I am one of those impulsive few that decided to hop on the new keyboard awesomeness that Apple has released. There’s one thing though: I don’t have a desktop computer — just my MacBook Pro.
I bought the keyboard for a few reasons (besides the fact that it is a beautiful work of art), one of which being that I enjoy using a full keyboard when it is available. Personally, I can’t say I’m too fond of having to tuck my elbows close to me every time I use the computer (which is pretty much all day long).
So far, the keyboard is everything I expect it to be, with one incredibly annoying bug: the function key does not work.
If you use any program that requires the use of F1 to F12 then you most likely have disabled the default Apple configuration where it assumes control of the keys for it’s own selfish needs (screen brightness, volume, etc). As a consequence, you need to hit the “fn” key at the bottom left of the keyboard to temporarily regain this functionality. I’m cool with this and expect it the same behavior from Apple keyboard that I attach.
I’m rebooting now. If I don’t update this post then you’ll know that the update didn’t give me back my “fn” key and that I’m in a huff.
Update: It worked!

Not unless you feel like forcing it in. According to the site (http://apple.com/keyboard), the wireless one is much, much smaller than the USB one. That would definitely fit nicely into my bag — except it’s not a full keyboard (notice no number pad) so I personally don’t care to have it.

What’s the 16MB thing you downloaded?
I just ordered a new iMac, and I’m looking forward to using their keyboard when it arrives!

The 16MB file was part of a software update automatically suggested by apple. If your computer doesn’t fully recognize the keyboard immediately, go to (apple) > Software Update while the keyboard is plugged in and it should take care of the rest.
After that it works like a charm.

Is it small enough to put in your backpack/laptop case? That would be a nice feature. I do love some number pad, second control key (instead of second Enter key, dumb) and especially the delete [x] key.
For sure. Volume? Brightness? A Programmer craves not these things.
