Your Random Historical Figure of the Day: Tatanka Iyotanka (Sitting Bull)

The Quick and Dirty

  1. Sitting Bull is arguably one of the most famous Native American chiefs in the history of The West.
  2. After years of fighting and slaughtering (on both sides), Sitting Bull had a vision of defeating the US army as they entered is territory to fight.
  3. Shortly thereafter the vision came true when Lieutenant-Colonel George A. Custer and about 240 of his men was defeated at the Battle of Little Big Horn (AKA: Custer’s Last Stand).

Be sure to check out the Wikipedia entry: Sitting Bull for more information. The West, a PBS documentary by Ken Burns, also offers a complete account of his life before, during and after the Battle of Little Big Horn. The PBS website has a great biography of Sitting Bull as well.
